Has their ever been a teaser trailer that shows you so little of a movie, yet when it is over you feel you have already seen the entire film? That is the experience I had watching the teaser for next year's The Smurfs. Let me tell you, this is not a good thing.
Let us begin with the word "Smurf'd". You see, getting rid of the 'e' between the 'f' and the 'd' makes it cool. Not to mention the hip hop beat in the background.
How many times have movie trailers began with ominous music and apparently serious situations but suddenly devolved into "comedy"? I stopped laughing at this technique when I was five.
The way this film looks is hardly a surprise, as it is helmed by Raja Gosnell, who has a filmography only a mother could love. His first film was Home Alone 3. Not very good, but I can live with it. After that came Never Been Kissed. Then the wheels came off the wagon. He is the director of Big Momma's House, and both Scooby Doo movies. His last two films were Yours, Mine, and Ours and Beverly Hills Freakin' Chihuahua.
Raja Gosnell is a special kind of director. One who adheres so strictly to garbage that I cannot help but kind of admire him. Then again, he's got money and I don't, so who am I to tell him what to do with his profession. Of all the films he's directed, the average Tomatometer on rottentomatoes.com falls at 29.3%. The Smurfs doesn't appear as if it will raise it much higher.
