For me, the most interesting part of this trailer comes near the end. It was as close to a real-life spit-take as I've ever experienced. Watch and see if you notice it:
The moment comes when the cast is advertised, and to help you out here's a screenshot:
One of these things is distinctly not like the others. Yes, ignore the fact that Amanda Bynes has played a high-schooler for what seems like decades. Ignore the rather odd presence of Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci as the (probable) parents. The oddest casting in recent memory comes in the form of Malcolm McDowell, who never appears in the trailer. For those who don't know, this is Malcolm McDowell:
Now, obviously he won't be the main character of Easy A. On IMDb he is credited as "Principal Gibbons". I realize he is much older now and doesn't exactly resemble our dear old droog Alex, yet whenever I see Malcolm McDowell onscreen it is never long until "Singin' in the Rain" enters my head. That is just one of the pieces of music A Clockwork Orange ruins for the rest of eternity after watching it.
This, of course, is all a testament to the sheer, haunting power that film still has 39 years after the fact. Easy A will likely not travel down those same alleys, unless they have a big time twist coming our way, which I'm all for.
I actually kind of like the trailer for Easy A as a whole, believe it or not. Emma Stone won me over in the joyride that is Zombieland, and the trailer here doesn't take us through each character's emotional arc, something many trailers have done of late. It presents its premise, offers a couple jokes, and gets out of your way without ruining the whole movie. Some of the jokes don't land (anyone just now making fun of Tom Cruise is a bit late to the party) but I'm kind of intrigued by what can be done with the rather interesting premise. The early hype is promising, so I'll probably end up seeing it and reporting back.
Easy A opens a week from today, September 17th, so you and your droogs can viddy it and afterwards go to Korova for some moloko.
