Trailer Trash (Classic Tammy! Edition)

Disney's upcoming film Prom is, on the surface, an admirable project. I can't pretend to know much about it, except that I hope it doesn't wade too naively into High School Musical hand-holding territory. Here is the trailer:

This trailer seems to advertise exactly what you'd expect from a Disney-produced film entitled Prom, but ignore that. What concerned me the most about this trailer is the fact that just under a minute in you can plainly see that the high school is on freaking fire.

My guess is that it is likely a dream sequence of sorts, but what if it isn't? What if, in fact, Disney's Prom becomes a horror film in the vein of Carrie? Probably not, but what if? I'd see that in a heartbeat. Instead, Prom is likely to be a neutered film which treats prom as this fairy tale moment in a young teenager's life. If they have a bad prom they will never be able to live it down! If they mess this up, they'd best crawl in a hole, never to see the sun again!

I think it'd be refreshing to see if this film approaches the subject of Prom from a more realistic perspective. That doesn't mean it needs to go the full Superbad and have the dance-goers getting drunk and fooling around the parking lot. I just hope the emotions are somewhat real, and maybe they make a high school film that can be appreciated by high-schoolers. As it stands, Disney projects like this have not been made so that high schoolers and mature teenagers could relate. Instead, they are made for a substantially younger audience. Prom does not need to be dirty or cynical, but all I ask is that it is mature.

My prom? Well, I was on cold medication most of the night, as my nose was dripping like a broken faucet. Only with boogers. My pants broke and had to be held up by various methods that would have made MacGyver proud. The good news? Nothing burned down in a Stephen King inferno.

  1. I'd just like to note that my censorship of the "Always Sunny" clip makes it sound more explicit that it actually is.
