Disc of the Week (4/12/11)

It is this week I decide to put on my fanboy hat and abandon any sense of credibility. My choice for the week’s best DVD release is Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows: Part I. Yes, there are many problems with this movie. It’s long, not much happens, and it doesn’t so much end as it stops.

On the other hand, it has one thing going for it: it’s Harry Potter. I have grown up with this series, and as a result I’m more prone to forgive its faults, as plentiful as they may be. I’ve spent far too many years invested in these characters to start complaining now. It seems wrong. In fact, most of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I is done quite well. It’s just a bit long, and when all’s said and done it doesn’t feel like a finished film. It’s incomplete.

Of course, it never really was intended to be its own film. Part I is in the title after all. Of course separating Deathly Hallows into two parts is one big cash grab, but it seemed to go over well enough with the Harry Potter fan base. The final chapter will be released this summer, and what better way to prepare than sitting back and watching the film which sets it all up?

Though perhaps it’s best that you just wait until Part II is released on Blu-ray and DVD, at which point you can buy the inevitable 2-for-1 pack. So – in summation – ignore everything I just said.
