I shall begin this post by acknowledging my absence over the course of the past week or so. As a new year of studies begins this week, I have spent this time moving in to a new place and much of it was without quality Internet access. Also, a little bit of time without y’all was nice. I saw Drive again and it was still awesome, so that’s what’s been going on. How have you been? Good? Cool! Well with that, allow me to dive in to my choice for the Disc of the Week: the female-centric Apatow comedy that unexpectedly took this summer by storm: Bridesmaids. Upon its release, this film was met with near-deafening praise from critics and audiences alike, thus signifying that few things bring this nation together like a group of women graphically suffering from food poisoning.
While I am not necessarily among those who believe this film to be the cure for cancer, I do believe that Bridesmaids is one of the more reliable R-rated romps to come out this year. (Though I may be the only one on this planet that believes Bad Teacher is at least its equal.) Much of this credit goes to the cast, led by veteran improv comediennes such as Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Melissa McCarthy, who could extract the funny from a piece of concrete. They are all led admirably by director Paul Feig, who has been known as a terrific actor’s director all the way back to the days when he created the great show Freaks and Geeks. The greatest joy of Bridesmaids is getting to see a bunch of funny, talented people at the top of their game. That the film was so successful is heartening to say the least.
Besides Bridesmaids, the rest of the DVD/Blu-ray releases are mostly comprised of television shows that I don’t watch. Examples: Body of Proof, Castle, Happy Endings, Hawaii Five-O, the canceled Law & Order Los Angeles, The Mentalist, Mike & Molly and Raising Hope. If you want any of those, go get them. If not, it’s no snot out of my nose. Just check out Bridesmaids and be happy.
