Every once in a while, I will see a movie and leave convinced that it is pretty spectacular, only to realize with time that it actually isn’t all that special. One such example is my DVD/Blu-ray pick of the week: the romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love, which I gave an ‘A-’ and called my favorite romantic comedy of the past two years. All this time later I can admit that while I still love the movie, that may be a bit of an overstatement. It remains a very funny and touching film about several characters coming to terms with their respective romantic identities, but I can’t promise it’s going to stick with you for a long time to come. All this time later, I can only recall a few moments that made me smile. Much of the rest is just a blur.
However, if you’re looking for something to check out at home I can’t think of a recent, comparable movie that I’d recommend more highly. Ryan Gosling continues his streak of awesomeness with a hilarious, smooth-as-silk performance, and the rest of the cast—including a couple younger actors—performs admirably as well. It’s certainly far better than this week’s other major releases, including the harmless mediocrity Water for Elephants and the apparently subpar Pixar film Cars 2 that I didn’t see. Also of note: the Joel Schumacher/Nicolas Cage film Trespass is released this week, despite hitting theaters not just two and a half weeks ago. Apparently that didn’t go well, as it only made (wait for it) $24,094 at the box office. That’s not a typo. That’s just five figures. That’s barely over the poverty line for a family of four.
