Golden Globe Nominations

Why we, as a culture, care about the Golden Globes is beyond me. It's held by the Hollywood Foreign Press, and essentially all the awards tell us is what a select few journalists from other continents think of our movies and television. Annually people claim that the Golden Globes are meant to be a forecast of sorts for the Oscars. Not the case. Last year's two winners in the film category were Avatar and The Hangover. Best Picture at the Oscars went to The Hurt Locker. Looking back at past Golden Globe ceremonies, only five times in the last decade did they award a top prize to a film which would win big at the Oscars, the films being Slumdog Millionaire, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Chicago, A Beautiful Mind and Gladiator.

Ultimately, the awards hold no significance except to get all the biggest Hollywood stars in one room so they can get drunk together, while looking FABULOUS, of course. Once again, the host this year will be Ricky Gervais, who so charmed all in attendance last year.

Whether they matter or not (they don't), it's still a fun awards show to watch. Just don't care too much about who wins and loses. I have copied and pasted the full list of nominees for your reading pleasure below, with some further comments underneath.

Comments
-Not much surprise as far as Best Drama is concerned. The only notable omission is True Grit, which many have yet to see. Again, I doubt this will hurt its chances going forward. Same goes for Best Director.
-Best Actress (Drama) this year seems to be a battle amongst those in films the mainstream public hasn't seen. Heck, I only heard of Frankie & Alice last week, and all I saw was a still.
-Ladies and gentlemen, the Best Musical or Comedy category is absolutely horrific this year. Red? The Tourist? Burlesque? Alice in Wonderland? If The Kids Are All Right doesn't win, there is no justice in this world. By the way, I defy you to watch the horrifically boring Red and call it one of the year's best anything.
-Nice to see Emma Stone getting a nod for Easy A.
-It's Johnny Depp vs. Johnny Depp in the Best Actor (Musical or Comedy) category! I hope Johnny Depp wins. Wait, no I don't.
-Andrew Garfield rightfully nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category. The best performance in a film full of them.
-Just looked at the Best Original Song category. I couldn't hum any of them. Where's "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp"?
-Hey, look! There are four other animated movies for Toy Story 3 to beat!
-How Breaking Bad and Community are not nominated in the television categories is beyond me. How can that be when nearly every "Best of 2010" television list that's been released has them at the top?
-I thought The Big C was supposed to be pretty lackluster? I guess not. I haven't seen it. I never will.
-Piper Perabo is nominated for Best Actress (TV Drama) for her work in Covert Affairs. This is being called the most random major awards nomination in recent history, and rightfully so. This would be like nominating Antione Dodson for Best Actor, so run and tell that, homeboy.
-Go Kelly Macdonald!

That is all ladies and gentlemen. Tune in on January 16 to watch a bunch of celebrities congratulate each other while Ricky Gervais cracks wise!

  1. I know 2010 wasn't a good year for movies, but couldn't the Golden Globes Hobgoblins at least pretend it wasn't?

  2. If you look at the drama category you may smile with approval, but when you look at Musical/Comedy, a part of you dies inside.
