Disc of the Week (10/18/11)

In a summer full of R-rated comedies, many of which had female protagonists, I felt rather alone in proclaiming the Cameron Diaz vehicle Bad Teacher as one of my favorites. Where some were turned off by the lack of any plot momentum, I embraced it as a sort of “hang out” movie; in many ways it felt like a sitcom’s first season condensed down into a single 92 minute package. All of the characters felt well-realized, were perfectly-cast, and (most of all) were just a lot of fun to watch onscreen. I giggled like a maniac at this movie from front to back, though I admit that the ending felt a little too convenient and unearned. Audiences seemed to agree with me, as Bad Teacher made a staggering $214 million worldwide at the box office. If you didn’t see it in theaters, I think you’ll get quite a kick out of this one.

Not too much else I can recommend this week, but in “movies I want to check out” news there is Kevin Smith’s controversial Red State, which marks his first foray into horror filmmaking. No matter its quality, it remains disappointing that he once again chose to make it about himself more than his art. That’s always been my main beef with Smith: he is unable to let the attention drift away from himself. When I see Red State, I will likely be unable to remove Smith’s face from my head. In my eyes, that’s not my fault. It’s all his own doing.

That’s all for now. Happy viewing, all.
